Gardens and Tapestries in the Renaissance
2024,
Mechelen, Museum Hof Van Busleyden
14.12.2024 – 16.03.2025
Drawing inspiration from sixteenth-century Flemish tapestries in Cardinal Granvelle’s collection, the design creates the impression of a timeless garden, firmly grounding visitors in the historic context of the museum.
The exhibition space is enveloped in an intense shade of green, referencing the museum’s own restored Renaissance gardens and reinforcing the notion of entering a cultivated yet ephemeral landscape. The sub-themes of the exhibition are coded by vibrant colours reminiscent of flowers.
At the heart of the installation, five monumental tapestries are displayed around visitors, echoing their original layout and inviting an intimate encounter.
Rather than creating a literal garden, the scenography plays with spatial layering: free-standing, monumental triangular walls act as subtle partitions that guide viewers while preserving lines of sight and allowing glimpses across the exhibition. Ambient sounds, including birdsong, and tactile stations for the playful exploration of garden design further enhance the exhibition's multi- sensory experience.
