Dieric Bouts: the Creator of Images
2023,
Leuven, Museum M
20.10.2023 - 14.01.2024
Dieric Bouts: the Creator of Images exhibition displays an extensive overview on the Flemish master in the context of the the 'New Horizons | Dieric Bouts Festival'. Never before have so many works of Bouts been brought together in his hometown. In addition, a completely new perspective is being sought on this work spanning five centuries: through a radical confrontation with the visual culture of today.
The competition winning design for the scenography of this exhibition was developed with a concept that is related to each theme. Rather than following the comparative nature of transhistorical exhibitions the scenography focuses on the dialogue of historical and contemporary visual culture.
Each gallery is dedicated to one aspect of Bout's paintings and contemporary images in dialogue with these aspects. The material furnishings of the individual sections support the themes, such as the light blue walls with a colour gradient that refer to the sky in Bout's paintings, the silver-painted OSB panels as a backdrop for glamorous images of Maria or the deep red, heavy curtains that envelop the Last Supper, aim to create a different kind of immersive experience by enabling proximity to the masterpiece. The use of contemporary media to represent contemporary visual culture has been developed equally with great care for the content.
